the whole point of an mmo is to be a giant community. Someone called it AIM with graphics. why would you bring a massive amount of players togeter if you didn't want them to form a community. Especially if its PvR instead of PvP
Wikipedia on MMORPGs-Solo Play wrote:
Although these games are multiplayer, and intended to be played in groups for the best experience, most now provide solo content, or adventures a player character can do on their own. It can be difficult to find a group to adventure with, and this allows people to play the game without waiting around in safe areas like cities for a long period of time. This change turned out to be popular, and some of the older MMORPGs such as Dungeons & Dragons Online were retrofitted to make solo play easier. Adding to the popularity is a side effect: some people prefer to solo. To encourage players to continue grouping, many games reward grouping by giving grouped players bonuses such as more experience points than they would otherwise get soloing.
Not everyone has friends that play the same game as them. Creating relationships online (you have no idea how many times I've heard about people having online girlfriends and boyfriends which defeats the purpose of "dating) are more likely than not to cause mental "instabilities" in young people, specifically those who have yet to (begin to) mature or gain full control of themselves (I have issues with killing regular, normal citizens in GTA IV, no lie). I would much rather have the ability to occasionally play with others, than to always have to rely on thick headed noobs through an in-game chat relay. That's why I stopped playing Runescape, too many noobs and no longer enough stuff to actually do (I had 2 missions left on the free server which required me to be at a level that would take far too long to get to before becomming COMPLETELY bored with the game. Sure, I can pay 5 bucks a month and deal with less noobs, but that defeats the purpose of a FREE MMORPG. Additionally, I've found many MMOs to be lacking in ANY central plot AT ALL, and I thought that's what RPGs are all about. Combat systems and deep stories. Blizzard needs to get bent and hurry up with StarCraft 2, because clearly they should be in the RPG business. That's like having Will Wright and John Blow create an FPS, a genre that is a far cry to what they usually do. Also, I'm really hoping that Blizzard cancels it's upcomming MMO, and if not, I really hope it's not StarCraft. We all remember what happened to Third-Person Shooter StarCraft: Ghost...
Also, speaking of MMOs being all about community (and I assume you're saying that's why they're less about gameplay, not sure) doesn't that also defeat the purpose of calling it a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing
GAME? Just a thought.
Also, before I go back to watching The Dark Knight, I'll leave you with this:
