before I begin: storm's review and this "review" have completely coincidental times since I have never played GeoW up until this day.

Gears of War is one of the most hyped games on the market on any console. today some friends brought it over and we played some multiplayer (1 on 1, 2 on 2) and I couldn't keep my mouth shut...

first off the graphics are really good and all, but the grayness gets in the way of telling a wall and an enemy apart, the only major difference being enemies mostly move. then I noticed the weapons are incredibly imbalanced. the game's logic goes like this: an elephants worth of blood going out from your head = a mere flesh wound and if something on your opponent (preferably the head) doesn't go boom he's probably not dead (unless you've been shooting him for 7 hours/been using the shotgun which btw has a way too easy time to get headshots.) the lancer (assault rifle w/ chainsaw) won't kill your opponent with a millions shots in the head which is not only extremely unrealistic but also very frustrating making a single firefight between two people take way too much time (this is combat, people.) the only real explanation I could come up with is that in the future, people will have either started using peas as ammo or will have sniffed titanium plated into their heads. why an assault rifle can't kill another human with 10 shots into their heads while a simple grenade can damage them twice as much when they're far away from the explosion is beyond me, at least.

there are also weapons that make no sense. the sniper is acceptable (let's face it: the sniper's never been a balanced weapon and only pussies use them lol), but some other weapons like the revolver (wtf), some weapon called something with shot (it apparently fires some sort of grenade that explodes into several smaller ones that then explode and they all kill you with ONE shot) and a few other weapons can kill you with a few, or even a single, shot.

weapon imbalance aside, this game has also something that's by itself close to a dealbraker to me: the awful controls. you have the standard buttons like reload, cover, shooting and stuff, but trying to figure out how they thought when they mapped the buttons like this is like being repeatedly hit with a sledgehammer of confusion. the reload button is RB which takes a few mins to get used to, but that's not the main problem. the A button takes cover, rolls, rolls to cover, rolls from one cover to another, climbs things, sprints and a few other things. you cannot climb short walls without first attaching yourself to them either. why the commands aren't spread out in a smarter way is pretty mindblowing.

long story short: I don't like this game. >:(

mabye ur just horrible shots:P and the "shot" weapon is a boom shot, used by the boomer locust if u played story mode, their rocket launchers simply. And you can kill people with the lancer with headshots in less then a round:P

If I'm playing somebody locally and am standing right in front of him then there is no reason for him to bleed as much from his head and not die. if you still don't believe I hit him, it came blood from him when I was shooting him and that usually means you hit someone.

this is the end of the 21st century. you would think that developers (especially the ones behind UNREAL TOURNAMENT) should've gotten a sense of balance and now have understood that rocket launchers are one of the most broken weapons there are. especially since the multiplayer has no vehicles so there is no excuse.

oh and singleplayer sucks. you just stop and pop all the time. woohoo.

my point here is that an assault rifle should not have to take that many rounds to kill an opponent, especially when you're shooting him in the head. not to mention the rebounding health meter is waaaay too generous considering half of the weapons take so long time to kill with.

btw I forgot to add the most important thing of all: how broken the melee system is. basically if you use the lancer to kill someone in melee combat you kill him in one "shot" and are invincible while doing so, resulting in some terribly stupid and ridiculous moments. one person killing 4 people with 4 shots by being invincible while he's killing them 1 by 1? that's balance right there. I do see where they're trying to go with this, but it's so poorly executed that it is seemingly just there to be flashy.

no, cuz that's the thing: half of the weapons that kill in one shot require you to be nearby and most weapons are most effective at close range which does not make them imbeciles, especially not in simple team dm.
